CNMI Public Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez disclosed yesterday that the Pacific Island Health Officers Association adopted a decision last month declaring a regional state of health urgent situation due to the epidemic of non-communicable diseases in the United States-affiliated Pacific Islands.
These diseases that continue to grow at an disturbing rate include diabetes, cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, gout, arthritis, and depression. Speaking before participants of yesterday's 13th Micronesian Chief Executives Summit, Villagomez said the association made the statement to elicit a greater response from donors and local responders-parallel to that given for H1N1, bioterrorism, and SARS.
The association's emergency declaration is not lawfully binding but is designed to make a strong point, he added. “NCD is a larger problem for the Pacific region. Data is alarming and obvious. but we are not receiving the same response,” said Villagomez. He said U.S.-allied Pacific islands are among the worst with NCD diseases and risk factors in the world.
