The number of people impure by the potentially fatal flesh-eating disease that claim the legs of Christchurch fishing guru Ross Millichamp has risen significantly.
Findings from the first nationwide appraisal of cases of necrotising fasciitis (NF), recently published in the Journal of Infection by Otago University researchers, showed rates have risen considerably across New Zealand.
NF is a severe bacterial infection that rapidly destroy soft tissue most harshly affected people require extensive surgery and sometimes elimination of limbs to prevent the infection from spreading.
