Pox Parties A Time-Honored Way To Build Immunity


Chances are good that you've had the chickenpox iIt's itchy and it's unhappy but, for many, it's just part of being a kid you deal with it and then you're frequently immune but the chickenpox puts more than a thousand people in the hospital every year a few even die and it's much worse if you get it as an adult that's why many parents are turning to "pox parties" to depiction their children to the virus while they're young in order to "get it out of the way."

"When we were kids, cousins got it and you went to their house to get it and they had their friends over," says Ginny Reeves, a mother of two in Logan, "It was forever something that was kind of a given if an important person that you know had chickenpox and your kids didn't have it, you took them over to be exposed,"Reeves' story is the same as millions of other Americans have the chicken pox as a kid was no big deal so, when her own kids developed symptoms, Ginny's mom reminded her about have a pox party.

"Three years ago, when my kids got it, I put an message on Facebook, 'Hey, my kids have a fever it's not extremely high but they've got chickenpox if anybody wants it, c'mon over,'"There weren't any takers for Ginny's pox party but there are thousands of parents who would jump at the opportunity.
